Holding Time, Place, Architecture, Landscape, and Legacy

Tucked within the tranquil greenery of Katugasthota, near Kandy, House stands as a living tribute to Anuradha Seneviratna a distinguished scholar, historian, and lyricist whose work profoundly shaped Sri Lanka’s cultural narrative.

His library, once rich with volumes, reflected a life devoted to knowledge. Today, only a curated collection remains, as many books were generously donated to the University of Peradeniya, Kandy Sri Lanka. Over the course of his life, he authored nearly seventy books and more than two hundred academic articles, exploring Sinhala literature, Sri Lankan history, and ancient cities such as Kandy, Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa.

Beyond academia, he was a gifted lyricist whose words enriched Sinhala music and cultural expression. His contributions were widely recognized, including the prestigious Kala Keerthi, alongside international honours such as the Fulbright Scholarship and the Commonwealth Academic Fellowship. He passed away on July 9, 2009, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations.

Within Bhargavati House, visitors encounter a carefully preserved collection of paintings, sculptures, ornaments, and personal artifacts each carrying fragments of memory and meaning.

Designed by the pioneering architect Minnette de Silva, the house stands as a rare and graceful example of tropical modernism where architecture responds sensitively to climate, culture, and landscape.

Once a vibrant home of ideas and intellectual exchange, today it offers a serene setting for reflection, creativity, and rest. Surrounded by lush gardens, rolling hills, and the quiet rhythms of village life, Bhargavati House invites you to slow down and reconnect with nature, with heritage, and with self.

Whether as a place of retreat, a cultural encounter, or a setting for creative work, this timeless home opens its doors to you.
